Vivahasammanam is a 1971 Indian Malayalam film, directed by JD Thottan . The film stars Prem Nazir, Sheela, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and Adoor Bhasi in lead roles. The film had musical score by G. Devarajan. The theme is the milch cow, the elder brother living for his mother and sibling, who doesn't appreciate the sacrifices.

An old tharavadu is being divided and Kannankutty Nair(Prem Nazir) lives in one part of the house with his mother Parukkuttyamma (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), sister Sundari(Rani Chandra) and brother Madhavankutty(K.P.Ummer). His uncle Achuthan (Alummodan) is a hanger-on, living off Kannankutty. Kannankutty's greatest wish is to give a good education to his brother as he never had the chance to get an education himself. Working as a peon in Tahsildar's office, he is a person who helps everyone in the village as he can.

The Tahsildar's daughter Meenkashi lusts after Kannankutty and tries to seduce him one night when he spends the night. He mentions this to the Tahsildar and gets a transfer to the village office in his village. Tahsildar is grateful for Kannankutty for coming him to instead of ruining the girls' life by a pre-marital sexual encounter.

In the village office, he meets the simple headed Kunjiraman Nair(Adoor Bhasi) from the tea vendor's shop, who does all the odd jobs at the shop and sleeps there. He also re reacquaints with Velukkuuty Nair, the village officer's son and falls in love with Gourikkutty(Sheela) the village officer's daughter. After an inspection by Tahsildar, the village officer Panicker falls ill. Panicker and his wife Madhavi comes to depend on Kannankutty like a son, and knowing his love for Gourikkutty, Panicker in his final moments bequeaths her hand in his.

Velukkuty Nair decides to conduct Kannankutty and Gouri's wedding before he goes back to Thiruvananthapuram on work. Kannankutty is elated and goes to buy a necklace - the eopnymous 'vivahasammanam' or wedding gift for Gouri. When he reaches home he realises that his family insulted Velukkutty and refused the alliance. They wanted Velukkutty to marry Kannankutty's lame sister Sundari in an exchange marriage.Kannankutty goes back to Velukkutty and tells them he is ready for the marriage without his family's blessing. Everyting is prepared, but knowing they will starve without Kannankutty's support his mother enlists the Tahsildar's help in convincing KAnnankutty to ask for a delay in marriage. Velukkutty is enraged and states that he will never marry his sister to such a spineless man. He takes his mother and sister to Thiruananthapuram for good.

Kannankutty agrees to a marriage set up by his family where his sister will marry into the family he marries from. However the marriages doesn't materialise. The tea shop owner suggests that Sundari can marry the hard-working yet naive Kunjiraman. This marriage occurs and Kannankutty with his savings and the share of the ancestral property, buys a house in Sundari's name where the entire family resides.

Madhavankutty meanwhile has fallen in love with a classmate, and Kannankutty helps them elope. Madhavankutty's wife's family decides to sponsor his studies to mae him a collector. Now Kannankutty is fast becoming an angry and frustrated man who feels he sacrificed his own happiness for others. After a dispute he leaves home, mirroring an earlier scene where the sister made him stay when he was planning to leave them for Gourikkutty. Unkempt and unwanted, and thrown out of the tea shop by his powerful brother's cronies he decides to go to Thiruvananthapura to visit the Tahsildar in his sick-bed. There at the steps of Padmanabhaswamy temple, Gorikkutty meets him and is shocked to see his appearance.

Gourikkutty takes him to her home, and her son and daughter takes to him with all the love and respect in the world. The son is named after him, and she tells him of her deceased husband. He has at last found a family, and tells her that now that he realises what he missed out on, he regrets it even more. He dies peacefully that night clutching the neck-lace he had carried all these years.
