Subaidha - 1965

A lot of these old movies were women's stories, even though the women weren't always the role model I would have them to be. Yet, the heroes of old weren't averse to playing an insignificant role in a female oriented script and that says something!. The movie Subaidha stars Ambika in the title role. This is the old Ambika, not the one from Rajavinte Makan.

Subaida is a 1965 Indian Malayalam film, directed by MS Mani and produced by HH Ebrahim. The film stars Madhu, Ambika, Prem Nawas and Bahadoor in lead roles. The film had musical score by MS Baburaj.

Subaidha's father died while she was an infant and she and her mother lives in penury. They are heavily in debt to Andru, who holds the titles to their house as collateral. Meanwhile her mother's nephews are doing well, with the elder one managing their estates. The younger nephew Ahmed(Madhu) has just returned home after completing his MBBS from Madras. His plan is to go back to Madras to set up a dispensary while his doting elder brother reminds him that good doctors are also required in villages. As an example he mentions their Aunt's persistent cough. Ahmed decides to visit the Aunt and takes along his bosom friend Mammu(Bahadoor) who is the local post-man. After reaching the Aunt's place Ahmed decides to stay for a couple of days after seeing the beautiful Subaidha. They fall in love, and Ahmed enlists Mammu's help in convincing his brother for the alliance.

His sister-in-law Ayisha(Meena) is against the wedding. There are two objections. Ahmed could command a very hefty dowry as a doctor and she sees Subaidha as an ill-omen having 'killed' her father in infancy. However the brothers love their Aunt and cousin and the marriage is settled. While coming to Ahmed's house after the wedding they have an accident and Ahmed is unconscious. The doctor tells Ahmed's brother and Mammu that there could be internal injuries to the head and he shouldn't exert himself. Mammu keeps watch at bedside. At night Subaidha comes into the room when Ahmed wakes up. Ahmed puts Mammu outside the door with his chair and the newlyweds consummate the marriage.

Once woken up, Mammu realises what happened and he starts teasing the couple, but realises Ahmed's condition has worsened. He mentions the doctor's advice that he shouldn't exert himself and Subaidha is horror-stricken. Ahmed dies and his sister-in-law reasserts her belief in Subaidha's ill-fate. Subaidha is pregnant by her wedding night encounter and since no one knew of it, her brother-in-law and family believes she is having an affair with their mute servant Beeran. She is kicked out of the house and Beeran escorts her to her mother's place. The mother dies in the shock of realising Subaidha is pregnant thinking it couldn't have been Ahmed's child. The orphaned Subaidha ekes out a living by establishing a canteen of sorts at her home with the help of Beeran. However Andru, who holds the titles to the house wants her to marry him, and beats up Beeran when Subaidha rebuffs him. He also gets her locked out of the house by calling in his credits and Beeran dies in a hospital due to his injuries. Subaidha gives birth to a daughter and is then turned out of the hospital as well.

With the baby in hands she walks around looking for a job. Noone wants to employ the pretty woman, and that too with an infant. Destitute she decides to end her life. Angered at the way the world is treating for having her husband's child, she goes to Ahmed's tomb and leaves the infant near the headstone and leaves. Mammu in the meantime comes there to say goodbye to his friend as he was leaving with his new wife Amina to Kannur on his job. Seeing the baby he picks it and takes along. There is a coincidence of his transfer that prevents him from knowing Subaidha's fate.

Subaidha has a change of heart and comes running back to get the baby but the baby is gone! She ends up in the same train as Mammu and family. Mammu's wife refuses to adopt the baby. There is a college professor and wife(Philomina) in the same train who are childless and Mammu gives them the child to bring up. Subaidha sees the couple with her child, but decides to let them bring her up. She manages to be a nanny in the household, but the mother, though kind, forbids her to help with the baby. After a few years she comes to know that Subaidha is her foster daughter's real mother and is grateful to her for being allowed to bring up her daughter.

Subaidha's daughter Salma grows up into a beautiful and modern woman, and falls in love with her father's student Salim(Prem Nawas). An alliance is fixed up, and when Subaidha realises the young man is Ahmed's nephew she decides to leave the house. Professor's wife convinces her to stay. However, it comes up in the wedding ceremony that Salma is adopted and the wedding is off. However, Mammu at the final moment reveals that Subaidha and Ahmed did consummate their marriage and he got the child in Ahmed's tomb. All's well and the families reunite for the wedding.
