Sunny(Vincent) and Vimala(Rani Chandra) are in love, with a lot of smooching going on. Kind of to show us audience that the woman is 'modern'. Vimala has a rich father, and Sunny's family is all for the marriage for the hefty dowry. Sunny's father Ouseppachan (Prem Nazir as an old man) and uncle Ummachan(Adoor Bhasi) visit Vimala's house and fix the wedding. Next step is that the bride's people have to come visit and gift them the dowry and the love birds are all happy. Ouseppachan's wife Mariamma(Sukumari) is planning to use the dowry for her own daughter's marriage.
Now comes the complications! On the day the father of the bride is to visit the family, a mysterious woman(Nandita Bose) comes and talks to Ouseppachan. Ouseppachan in turn refuses his consent for the wedding between Vimala and Sunny. Sunny is heartbroken and his mother and sister are furious. Ouseppachan, the poor orphaned boy and Valsamma, the only daughter of a rich man were in love in their youth. Her enraged father fixes her marriage with a doctor.(Cameo by Jayan). Valsamma is ready to go off with Ouseppachan, but Ouseppachan concedes the differences between them is too great. They then make a promise that they will get their children married to each other.
Valsamma marries her doctor, who turned out to be an alcoholic. He drank away her wealth before dying and now the destitute woman has come to Ouseppachan to honour his promise. She wants her daughter Rosily(Jayabharathi) married to Ouseppachan's son Sunny. Ouseppachan talks to Sunny and he reluctantly agrees to marry the girl for his father. Vimala's father threatens to sue Ouseppachan for the breach of promise. Rosily and Sunny gets married but Mariamma and daughter have decided to make her life hell. Sunny refuses to have any kind of relationship with his wife either. Vimala meanwhile has taken up with Shaji, another classmate of hers and we are treated to their antics at the beach and park, to show that the modern woman didn't have a heart after all. It is the perfect Rosily who yearns for her husband's love, but never gets it.
The family life is messed up. Everyone hates everyone else, and after a bad fight where Mariamma insinuates incest between Ouseppachan and Rosily, he admits it's better if she left them all. Rosily is back home, and she decides to go to America with a friend to study nursing. Only one issue--To get a passport, she needs her husband's consent. Otherwise, she can get her marriage annulled on grounds of non-consummation. The mother is in agreement, and Rosily writes a letter to Sunny requesting an annulment.
Mariamma is elated. Sunny meanwhile meets Shaji and Vimala and realises how fickle his lover was. He now realises the love of Rosily, but she wants to annul the wedding. He leaves home leaving a letter. Ouseppachan finds him in Rosily's house. All's well that ends well!
