Sheela is Achamma, the daughter of Mathai(T.S. Muthaiah),a blind man. He still rolls beedis to sell, and Chacko(Sathyan) collects the beedis from him. Chacko calls him Asan, as Mathai was the one who taught him to roll beedis. He also has a soft spot for Achamma and that is the reason for his continued reverence to Asan. Achamma sells the coir she makes in the local co operative society and one day a man follows her. She thinks the person (Prem Nazir) is out to molest her, and makes a ruckus. He turned out to be Babu, the new secretary of the society. Babu is smitten with the pretty village girl, and all ready for a little romance. Achamma falls in love with Babu, and people begin to notice them flirting. Chacko is hurt by the stories and goes to confront Babu. Babu loftily replies that "Men and women fall in love. I love Achamma and she loves me. Who are you to question that?". Chacko knows he is a nobody, so he goes to Mathai and proposes a marriage between himself and Achamma. Babu meanwhile goes to his hometown to try and convince his parents.
Babu's father(Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair) refuses permission and tells him he will be disinherited if he marries Achamma. His mother (Meena) is sympathetic but the father's will is paramount in the house. He also sets up a marriage of his choice for his son, with a wealthy family. Babu, though in love with Achamma, doesn't have the courage to oppose his father. Achamma tells his father about Babu. Mathai is furious that Babu didn't come to him. Aliyar, the neighbour, goes to Babu's house , but his father insults him for bringing the alliance. A very young Jayabharathi plays Sainaba, Aliyar's daughter. She plays the pretty lass making Ummukka's(Adoor Bhasi) heart flutter by just looking at him. There is a whole comic subplot going on there as is common with old movies.
Mathai fixes up Achamma's marriage with Chacko. At the church, Achamma says she is not ready to marry chacko, and Mathai is broken. Chacko is insulted and heart broken, but then he realises that it wasn't the best thing to force Achamma to marry him when she was in love with another man. He goes to Babu to convince him to accept Achamma. Babu does go to see Achamma, but meets only her father. Before he can meet her, he is carried away by his father and Achamma is again dejected seeing him leave. Mathai kicks Achamma out of the house and she takes refuge at the neighbour's. The blind man accidentally sets fire to the house, and Chacko dashes in to bring out his old teacher. Mathai dies, and Chacko loses his eye sight due to the burns suffered.
Achamma is at Chacko's bedside, and Sainaba and Aliyar comes to visit. They assure Achamma that she will always have a home with them. Babu's fixed wedding is called off due to the bride's family hearing about his affair with Achamma. His parents now give the blessing for his marriage with Achamma and a happy Babu comes to meet Achamma and Chacko at the hospital. Chacko is happy that Achamma will get her heart's desire. Achamma on the other hand says she doesn't want to be the plaything of a papa's boy. She only wants to be with Cahcko, the man who has always been there for her.
